Jeff Nuttall was born in Clitheroe in 1933. A true polymath, he was a sculptor, poet, publisher, jazz trumpeter, painter, anarchist, novelist, performing artist and lecturer. His most famous, landmark work, Bomb Culture, published in 1968 has been described as ‘the Old Testament of the counter culture’. He started ‘The People Show’, the experimental theatre group in 1966, was Chairman of the National Poetry Society (1975-6) and was the Society’s nominee for Poet Laureate. Up until his death in 2004, he performed regularly with his jazz band and could often be seen driving his car accompanied in the passenger seat by one of his mannequins.
